On 16 June 2014, Yacht Alexandria left Shotley near Harwich and sailed round Britain, visiting Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland, the Hebrides and Orkneys. The whole trip took 6 weeks, covered 2200 miles, involved 20 crew changes and took on some of the most difficult tidal waters and hostile coastline..and the British weather. A Challenge to be proud of. This is our blog. https://www.justgiving.com/s-p-o/

Dolphins in Mounts Bay
Wehave left Newlyn harbour and Sy Michael's Mount and a family of three dolphins/porpoises played around us while we nudged out to sea. Unbelievably beautiful and visible on the clear water. Very special. Off to round Zlands End tidal gate at 0900, then turning NE towards Padstow ETA 1830, quite a long day today because if the tidal calculations. Alastair joins us for supper this evening. Photo of dolphins/porpoises attached (anyone know the difference)

The difference between dolphin and porpoise is most obvious in the shape of the mouth: dolphins have a long, pointy one while that of a porpoise is stumpy/rounded. Or at least that's what I get from google images!
ReplyDeleteOr: if it doesn't look like Flipper, it's not a dolphin!
